Review

The year is 1980, and Italian horror movies are at the height of their popularity. With directors like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci making a name for themselves in the genre, it’s no wonder that Italian director Luigi Cozzi decided to jump on the bandwagon with his movie “Contamination”.

The storyline of “Contamination” is simple yet intriguing. A cargo ship arrives in New York City with its crew all dead and its cargo of coffee beans seemingly responsible for their demise. It’s then discovered that the coffee beans were contaminated by alien eggs that hatch into gruesome, tentacled creatures that explode human bodies from within.

The news of such a horrific event spreads like wildfire, and it’s up to a small group of experts, including an astronaut who was part of a failed Mars mission, to stop the alien threat before it spreads globally.

The plot may sound like something out of a typical B-movie, but Cozzi manages to elevate it with a sense of danger and urgency as the characters race against time to prevent more death and destruction.

The fact that “Contamination” was shot on a low budget doesn’t hinder its impact. The special effects may not be spectacular by today’s standards, but they’re still effective in creating the gruesome horror scenes.

One standout aspect of “Contamination” is its cast. Ian McCulloch plays our hero Hamilton – an astronaut who is reluctantly brought back into action after his past failed mission left him with PTSD.

McCulloch delivers some great lines throughout the movie; one notable quote being “I’ve faced death before. He wears many faces.”

With an intense yet relatable portrayal of Hamilton, McCulloch proves his worth as a leading man in this genre. Louise Marleau also delivers a solid performance as Dr. Fallada – one of the experts brought in to analyze the alien threat.

Despite being set in New York City, “Contamination” was actually filmed in Rome. The crew managed to do a great job of recreating the city’s bustling streets and busy docks.

The movie’s score, composed by Goblin member Fabio Frizzi, is also noteworthy. It adds an eerie and haunting atmosphere that complements the film’s horror elements perfectly.

Upon its release, “Contamination” received mixed reviews from critics. Many praised its effective horror scenes and overall atmosphere, while others criticized its pacing and lack of character development.

Despite any criticisms, “Contamination” has since gained a cult following among fans of Italian horror movies. Its popularity has led to it being released on Blu-ray twice, with the second release containing a host of special features such as interviews with the cast and crew.

Overall, “Contamination” may not be a perfect movie, but it’s still an engaging and entertaining example of Italian horror cinema from the 1980s. Its blend of sci-fi and horror elements, along with an intense performance from Ian McCulloch, make it one worth checking out for fans of the genre.
