Review
In the dystopian world of George Orwell, Darlings would be a film that brings together the best and worst aspects of society – love and hate, hope and despair. This darkly comedic movie is set in London during the 1950s and revolves around two women, Chloe and Ginger, who are swept up in a web of corruption, deception, and murder.
The plot centers on the seemingly mundane lives of these two average Londoners. Chloe is a stylish yet introverted bank worker who feels trapped by her job and lonely in her romantic life. Meanwhile, Ginger is a more extroverted seamstress who dreams of fame and fortune on the stage but can’t seem to break through.
However, their lives take a dramatic turn when they accidentally witness a brutal murder at the hands of a high-ranking police officer. Despite their fear for their own safety, they decide to take matters into their own hands to bring justice to the victim’s family–and themselves.
As they navigate through their newfound criminal world together, Chloe and Ginger’s friendship begins to blossom. Their relationship becomes an anchor in this terrifying world where danger lurks at every corner.
But with every step they take towards justice comes greater danger–not just from the murderer but also from those who seek to silence them. They must tread carefully while taking matters into their own hands.
One of the most compelling aspects of this film is its cast: Florence Pugh stars as Chloe while Alia Shawkat plays Ginger. Both rising stars in Hollywood have garnered critical acclaim for their nuanced performances. The chemistry between them feels authentic–it’s easy to forget that they’re acting.
Speaking about her character, Pugh said: “Chloe is incredibly complex–she’s not someone you can label easily.” Indeed, throughout the movie Chloe grapples with her morality as she becomes enmeshed in this criminal underworld.
As for Shawkat’s character Ginger, she’s the brave and daring one. Shawkat has said that Ginger is “the one who keeps dragging Chloe out of her shell.” She’s always pushing Chloe to come out of her comfort zone and experience life–even if it means breaking the law.
Darlings is directed by Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, whose previous works include the hit television series Industry. Their great attention to detail is clear in every shot–the film’s 1950s aesthetic feels authentic and fully realized.
In addition to its excellent direction, Darlings boasts an impressive soundtrack composed by Joe Hisaishi. The music punctuates every emotional beat of the story, adding to its tension and setting the tone for each scene.
The film premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival where it received rave reviews across the board: critics have praised everything from its cinematography to its performances. With its dark humor and gripping storyline, it’s no wonder that it has become one of the most talked-about films of the year.
Darlings also tackles themes such as social justice and class divide, making for a thought-provoking watch. It delves into issues surrounding power dynamics and corruption within institutions. At times it feels all too relevant in today’s world where police brutality remains a pressing issue across many nations.
However, not everyone has fallen in love with Darlings. Some critics have criticized its pacing, calling it slow at times–while others feel that it lacks depth in character development.
Regardless of these criticisms though, Darlings will remain one of this year’s most powerful films. It offers an exciting journey through the gritty underworld of London while also commenting on aspects of society that still hold true today.
Ultimately, this film is a mesmerizing work that leaves a lasting impression on its audience long after they’ve left the theater–and well worth a watch if you’re looking for something intense yet entertaining.
