Review

Mark Twain once said, “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.” This statement couldn’t be more applicable to the movie “Mean Dreams”, a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. Directed by Canadian filmmaker Nathan Morlando, Mean Dreams boasts an exceptional storyline coupled with superb acting skills from its cast.

The plot of ‘Mean Dreams’ revolves around two teenage lovers Casey (Sophie Nélisse) and Jonas (Josh Wiggins), who find themselves caught up in a web of deceit when they steal a bag full of money from Casey’s abusive father Wayne (Bill Paxton), who also happens to be a corrupt cop. With Wayne on their tail, the couple attempts to flee from their small town and start a new life together. But as they make their way through the dense wilderness, they soon realize that they are being pursued by a dangerous adversary who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

The movie earned some buzz when it premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2016, where it was applauded for the rawness and authenticity it brings to its depiction of teenage angst and rebellion. The actors’ performances were singled out for praise as well. As one critic put it: “Wiggins has an expressiveness that suggests Casey keeps him alive while Nélisse has such an expressive face that she can convey fear without having say anything.”

It’s been said that Bill Paxton’s performance in this film was his best until his sudden demise in 2017. He plays Wayne convincingly as a shady, manipulative man with unchecked power over those around him.

One of the standout scenes of ‘Mean Dreams’ happens early on in the movie when Jonas rescues Casey from her father’s abuse. They then proceed to steal money from Wayne, which sets off a chain reaction that puts their lives in danger. This scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie, delivering a ton of drama without any excessive theatrics.

The film’s score was composed by Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. Their music complements the tension and action present in the movie, giving you goosebumps in all the right places.

The cinematography is exquisite, with stunning shots of the Canadian wilderness that are both breathtaking and ominous. One of my favorite scenes involved Jonas and Casey sharing a moment on top of a waterfall. It’s serene but tense at the same time – a testament to Morlando’s flair as a director.

Aside from its incredible performances, Mean Dreams was lauded for its brutally honest yet nuanced depiction of small-town life. It highlights how corruption can extend even to those who are meant to uphold justice. It’s an exploration of themes such as abuse, betrayal, resilience and ultimately redemption that will linger in your mind long after you’ve finished watching it.

In conclusion, ‘Mean Dreams’ is a powerful movie that deserves more attention than it got during its initial release. Its subject matter may be dark, but it’s presented with sincerity and sensitivity that makes it worth watching. The cast delivers exceptional performances throughout, making their characters come alive onscreen and giving them depth beyond their lines. If you’re looking for an engaging drama with excellent cinematography and music, then ‘Mean Dreams’ is definitely worth checking out.
