“Bad Cat 2016” is a raunchy, animated film that follows a mischievous feline named Shero as he navigates the streets of Istanbul, causing chaos wherever he goes. Shero is like a rebel without a cause, always looking for trouble and enjoying the thrill of being naughty. But when his antics lead him into danger, he must rely on his friends to help him out of trouble. Along the way, Shero learns important lessons about friendship and loyalty while still managing to be the baddest cat in town.

Review
I’ve got a bone to pick with Bad Cat, a Turkish animation film that has been making the rounds in theaters and online platforms. The film follows the adventures (or should I say misadventures) of Shero, a foul-mouthed alley cat with a penchant for trouble. Don’t get me wrong, there were moments in the film where I found myself chuckling at Shero’s crude humor, but overall, I was left feeling underwhelmed.
It’s not just the cursing or lewd jokes that left me disappointed. The storyline felt at times disjointed and lacked coherence. Characters would appear without any real introduction or explanation – it was as if we were expected to know their entire backstory from previous films or cartoons they may have appeared in. Furthermore, while the film attempts to address issues such as police brutality and gentrification, it fails to provide any real commentary on these issues.
The voice acting also left something to be desired. While some of the performances were impressive (most notably Uğur Yücel as Shero), others fell flat. Certain characters were gratingly overacted while others sounded like they were reading lines off of cue cards.
In terms of cinematography, Bad Cat is certainly eye-catching. The animation is colorful and vibrant with an almost comic book-like quality. However, there are moments where the animation feels choppy and unfinished – particularly during action sequences which could have benefited from more fluidity and detail.
Despite its flaws, Bad Cat has garnered a following among audiences both in Turkey and abroad. It’s not surprising given that the film has taken almost eight years (!) to complete. Director Ayse Ünal has stated that one of her inspirations for creating this film was her love for Tom & Jerry style cartoons – which might explain why certain scenes feel reminiscent of classic cartoons from the ’60s.
While Bad Cat hasn’t won any major awards or critical acclaim, it has certainly made its mark on the animation world. It’s not every day that a Turkish animated film gets worldwide distribution and recognition. As Ünal herself has stated: “For me, it’s important to create a product that carries my own culture and identity, but can also be appreciated by people in other parts of the world.”
Despite my reservations towards Bad Cat, I can definitely appreciate what this film represents – namely, a celebration of Turkey’s unique cultural voice and an example of how animation can break down geographic and cultural barriers.
