Review

In the blistering heat of a sweltering summer, a group of young friends seek to find meaning and adventure in the midst of their youth. Directed by Frank Perry, “Last Summer” is an enthralling film that captures the beauty and complexity of adolescence in a small coastal town.

The film is based on Evan Hunter’s 1968 novel, “Last Summer.” The story follows four teenagers as they spend their last summer together before heading off to college. Peter (Richard Thomas), Dan (Bruce Davison), Sandy (Barbara Hershey), and Rhoda (Catherine Burns) are all too aware that this will be their last chance to truly experience life before it becomes complicated with adulthood and its responsibilities.

Set against the backdrop of Fire Island, New York; the group spends their days lounging on the beach, swimming in the ocean, exploring abandoned homes, and drinking beer. As they form a close bond with each other, they also begin to navigate the complexities of adolescent love and sexuality.

Things take a dark turn when they encounter another teenager named Nick (played brilliantly by newcomer Bruce Davidson) who imposes himself into their lives. Nick is confident, charismatic, and immediately catches Sandy’s attention. However, as they become closer to him they begin to uncover his true nature.

The storyline is an exploration of teenage angst and coming-of-age issues such as identity crisis, sexual awakenings & experimentation as well as peer pressure. The film portrays how these conflicts can shape one’s life forever.

The cast deliver unforgettable performances that truly bring this complex characters to life. Cathy Burns’ portrayal of Rhoda was hauntingly real; while Bruce Davison’s portrayal of sensitive Dan was poignant and Richard Thomas made Peter come across as quite naive but relatable for viewers.

The dialogue is full of wit and poetry that could only be expected from an Ernert Hemingway style script. Despite its dark themes, “Last Summer” is a beautiful and poetic film that perfectly captures the complex nature of youth.

The cinematography is a standout element of the film. Filmmaker Perry captures the serene beauty of Fire Island while also showing the harsh realities of coming-of-age during a time when society was struggling to evolve. The camerawork and framing are elegant without being overly showy.

The soundtrack is another factor that elevates “Last Summer” to being one of the best films of its era. It’s filled with iconic songs that defined a generation, such as “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and The Papas.

“Last Summer” was widely praised by critics upon its release in 1969, with many describing it as a masterpiece that perfectly encapsulated the zeitgeist of the era. Despite being released more than 50 years ago, it remains relevant and engaging even today.

The film won four awards at Cannes Film Festival, including Best Actress for Barbara Hershey. However, it didn’t become as popular as other coming-of-age movies such as “The Graduate” or “Easy Rider”.

It’s hard not to be emotionally invested in this movie’s characters and their stories. The ending of “Last Summer” is tragic but also quite poignant & unforgettable. It has been hailed by many critics as having one of cinema’s greatest endings ever.

To sum up, Last Summer is an extraordinary film about teenagers struggling to become themselves amid endless possibilities but also with their inevitable limitations in life set against beautiful coastal backdrop where dreams are born and shattered. It’s a classic tale about love, loss & betrayal which still holds up today after all these years- Perry’s vision allowed audiences to see something special about youth everywhere; something we can learn from even now as we navigate our own paths through life’s ups and downs.
